S2S postback: your affiliate network told on every sale
A postback is a server-to-server call that tells your affiliate network a sale happened, so it credits the right affiliate. You paste your network's postback URL into Oriva, with variables like {click_id} or {payout}. For every sale your server confirms, Oriva fills in those variables and calls the URL.
Which variables can go in the URL?
| Variable | Replaced by |
|---|---|
{click_id} | the affiliate's click ID, read when the visitor arrives (the aff_click_id parameter, or subid depending on the network) |
{payout} | the commission, which you send along with the sale (payout) |
{value} | the sale amount |
{currency} | the sale currency |
{event_name} | the conversion type (purchase, lead…), so one URL can handle several goals |
{event_id} | the sale's unique reference |
A variable with no value is replaced by an empty string: the call goes out anyway.
Why only sales confirmed by your server?
Because a postback triggers a real payment. The key Oriva places in your site's code is public by nature: anyone can read it. If it were enough to trigger a postback, anyone could make up a sale and get paid a commission. So Oriva only sends a postback for a sale sent by your server, with your secret key.
What if the visitor refuses cookies?
The postback goes out anyway: paying a commission is not ad targeting. But without the visitor's consent, Oriva does not keep their click ID, and {click_id} arrives empty. Your network will not be able to credit that sale to an affiliate.
Is my URL protected?
- only
httpsaddresses are accepted, and never an internal network address; - your network's token, if it is in the URL, does not appear in clear text in the log;
- if the URL is your own server, Oriva can sign every call (the
oriva_signatureparameter, HMAC-SHA256) so you can check it really comes from Oriva.
What happens if the network doesn't answer?
Oriva retries automatically after a network outage, a rate limit (429) or a server error (5xx). Any other error is final and visible in the log, with the status the network returned.
There is no test button here, on purpose: a test call would hit your network's real URL, and could trigger a real commission.
